We Americans are very benevolent. We have lots of compassion to pass around and can easily empathize with many causes. We always root for the deserving “underdog”. That is because of our own precarious start as a nation. Once we realized that we were a separate and distinct people, there was no holding us back in our quest for nationhood.

Perhaps these early traits are the only common-threads remaining for both the left and the right in a nation that has such a wide assortment of political views. However, basically most people will fall into two camps: one on the left-known as liberals and one on the right-known as conservatives.

When I think of somebody with compassion, I often think of a person who believes so highly of the human race that the idea of killing an unborn baby is totally abhorrent to them. This type of person can only be labeled a conservative. Liberals however, disregard the fact that an unborn baby is getting murdered and somehow rationalize the killing of the unborn as something personal that no one else could understand. Liberals also easily choose any myriad amount of warped reasoning to help justify their actions and beliefs regarding abortion.

Capital punishment is always a contentious topic. However, some crimes are so heinous, especially when committed against children, that the compassionate thing to do is to relieve the criminal of the torture of living with their heinous crime and simply execute them. There have been way to many incidences in our nation where misguided liberal-compassion has led to the release of non-rehabilitated criminals from our prisons and off they go again to offend in the same manner. At this point, society and the unfortunate individual who is victim to the criminal again, looses big time to the criminal. Violent-heinous crimes once committed are once to many. The compassionate road to take is: if execution is not going to happen, then at least “throw away the key”. The liberal view is that everybody is salvageable so let the criminal out into society. Liberals are sorely mistaken on this account.

Most of us work very hard to acquire what we need or want in our life. That is the American way. Work hard and you will be rewarded is the common cultural-phrase that we have all heard since childhood. But when the government wants to take so much money from you and inhibit the opportunities to advance and succeed at the expense of “spreading your hard work around”, well then that can hardly be considered a compassionate approach to society and to any individual. People with integrity do not want a hand out. They at best want a helping hand up. What I teach my children is; would you rather that I give you a fish daily so that you can eat, or do you want me to lend you one of my fishing poles so that I can teach you how to fish? That way, when I am gone, you can be self-sustaining. Why would you want to be dependent upon anybody? If you are dependent, that is when you will loose control over your life. And you can perhaps buy my fishing pole from me in the near future or give it back to me with thanks and then go buy a better fishing pole, one that you prefer and one that will make you a profit by selling excess fish to others. The former example of fishing (the hand-out) is called liberalism and the latter fishing example is called conservatism. Where is the compassion with the insistence of keeping people dependent? Only liberals argue for that dependency and that is hardly compassionate.

Finally a quick dichotomy of liberals and conservatives will show that the differences between the two viewpoints are great. While liberalism promotes welfare, conservatives promote self-sufficiency. Liberals argue for the endless collection of taxes, conservatives believe that people should keep their hard earned money and choose where to charitably give their money. Liberals will argue that animals and plants are on an equal and moral footing as people and that laws and policies from government and corporations should reflect that view. Conservatives will simply say that view is extremely flawed and that human beings are far more important than other entities of life. Liberals support the notion that when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns. In other words, do what the criminal wants you to do and perhaps you will survive a terrible incident. Conservatives believe in the right of individuals to protect themselves from heinous criminals at all times with the use of fire arms. The list goes on and on, both culturally and morally.

Conservatism will protect families and individuals better with clear human-reasoning. Conservatism takes into consideration a compassionate element of thought. Liberalism is devoid of this thought. It’s just about feeling good with a large dash of political correctness on top.
