Violence is NEVER the Answer?

Posted by Howie On June - 23 - 2009

Ok, the story below is not the usual kind of thing that you will find on CW; but it goes hand in hand with something I have been thinking about for a long time.

It appears that Perez Hilton was a jerk again and he finally got what he deserved.  Yes, I said he deserved it.  I do not follow Hilton on Twitter or TMZ or any of the other entertainment sites but he has made it onto the airwaves of MSNBC, FOX and other news channels for his usual bad behavior and name calling.  I also have to give GLAAD a little credit for coming out and saying that Hilton needs to apologize, but only a little.  They say that Hilton needs to apologize for using a word that they find offensive.

I saw the story concerning Will.i.am and Hilton on Fox News this morning with Megyn Kelly reporting on it.  She told the story and gave the facts but left a few things out, in my opinion anyway.

Guys like Perez feel that they can say whatever they want because of their 1st Amendment protections, but the 1st Amendment only protects your right to say derogatory and mean spirited words.  Maybe it is just the Marine in me, maybe I just grew up in a time when there was something known as “Fighting Words”.  I don’t know the answer for sure, but I like to think of myself as a man’s man and there are certain things that will move me to violence.

If you touch my kids, hit a woman in front of me, being a bully because you think you are picking a fight that you can win, or present yourself to me in a threatening manner I will not feel badly if YOUR actions move me to violence.  I am not the biggest guy in the room anywhere I go, unless it is a room full of midget strippers, but I feel that the way that I grew up and the training I recieved in Marine Corps bootcamp I can hold my own even when losing a fight.

The “Violence is NEVER the answer” crowd have actually made society less civil and more mean spirited in my opinion.  It used to be that people would watch what they said in mixed company, or when thinking poorly about someone because the opening of the mouth and spewing the venom that is so thoughtlessly spewed today might get you punched in the mouth.  And when the police came and heard what happened they would even say to the jerk that he/she got what they had coming.  And the cops were usually correct!

In politics, critiques, editorials and anything else where an opinion was written or spoken people were more curtious and thoughtful about the words that they used because common sense said that if you said something heinous about someone you might just have to defend your words in a physical conflict, and if it was worth the fight you would say your piece if not you would tone down the rhetoric and the name calling.

It has even gotten to the point that my 7th grade son is afraid to defend himself if someone hits him because both people in a physical conflict at school get the same punishment.  I have told my kids that if someone puts their hands on them and they do not fight back they have more to fear about coming home without defending themselves than they do by getting suspended from school for fighting.  I have also told them that if they start the fight, either with their words or fists and do not have a very good reason for it, they will answer for it when they get home.

I have taught my kids that no one really wins a fight it is more like who didn’t lose as bad, the only exception to that rule is a one punch fight.  But more importantly I have taught my kids that violence may not be the answer, but sometimes it is the solution!

GLAAD asks Perez Hilton to apologize for anti-gay slurs against Will.i.am
The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has asked Perez Hilton to apologize for slurs he hurled at Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas.

GLAAD was responding to a video posted by the celebrity blogger, whose legal name is Mario Lavandeira, in which Hilton gave his version of events after Will.i.am posted a video describing their recent confrontations at and after the MuchMusic Video Awards. Said Hilton in his video: “I made the split-second decision — that I was gonna say what I thought was the worst possible thing that thug [Will.i.am] would ever want to hear” — which was a handful of assorted F-bombs.

Rashad Robinson, GLAAD’s senior director of media programs, said: “These are vulgar anti-gay slurs that feed a climate of hatred and intolerance toward our community. For someone in our own community to use it to attack another person by saying that it is, quote, ‘The worst possible thing that thug would ever want to hear,’ is incredibly dangerous. It legitimizes use of a slur that is often linked to violence against our community. And it sends a message that it is OK to attempt to dehumanize people by exploiting anti-gay attitudes.”

“We have reached out to Hilton and asked him to apologize for promoting this anti-gay slur, and we would ask media outlets to avoid repetition of the slur in their coverage of this story.”
